Bio

Freda Kelley Woodburn died Monday, March 30, 2015. She was 90 years old. Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m, today, in First Christian Church with Dr. Barry Loving, pastor, officiating. Private burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd. Mrs. Woodburn was born Nov. 27, 1924, in Sweetwater, Okla., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Kelley. The family moved to the Earth, TX area in 1928 to join her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Kelley and Mr. and Mrs. W.A. McCord, who were among the first families to purchase and farm land after the break-up of the Halsell ranch. She attended public school at Springlake - Earth, the first consolidated school in Texas and situated on land donated by her grandfather, J.F. Kelley, graduating from high school in 1941. She attended West Texas State College and later attended Amarillo College and Texas State Technical Institute receiving a certificate in Interior Design. She married Alva Thornburg in 1942, and after his death in 1961, she married Charles R. Woodburn in 1967. She resided in Carson County and was a 4H coach and leader for a number of years coaching and taking two winning teams to the state contests at Texas A&M. After moving to Amarillo in 1961, she was a Sunday school teacher of five year olds at Paramount Baptist Church and was active in both Ridgecrest and Crockett PTA. Mrs. Woodburn was a member of First Christian Church where she served on the Building Committee and did the planning and design of the kitchen remodeling in Snodgrass Hall. She served eighteen years as Treasurer of Christian Women’s Fellowship. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi and served in all offices including President of her local chapter, and was President of City Council of Beta Sigma Phi and she served as a volunteer in the Indigent Clinic of Northwest Texas Hospital and as a volunteer at High Plains Baptist Hospital, where she helped establish the Candy Striper program. She served six years on the Texas State Historical Survey Committee during which time the name was changed to the Texas Historical Commission. She was a quilter and received recognition for the excellence of her quilts. Mrs. Woodburn was preceded in death by her grandparents; her parents; one daughter, Brenda; two brothers, Guy F. Kelley and Donald C. Kelley; two brothers-in-law, William Flowers and Byron Smith; and two sons-in-law, Harry LaGrange and Don Snelleman; and one grandson, Tyler Thornburg. Mrs. Woodburn is survived by her husband, Charles Woodburn; one son, Dr. Wayne Thornburg and wife Yesinia of El Paso; one daughter, Gwen Combs and husband Hal of Frisco, TX; three stepsons, Phillip Woodburn, Dr. David Woodburn and wife Alicia, and Judge Douglas Woodburn and wife Caroline, all of Amarillo; one stepdaughter, Shelley and husband Dr. Sam Lippincott of Moorestown, NJ; three sisters, Betty Jean Smith of Edwards, Missouri, Lagueta Dent and husband Don of Hurst, Texas and Joann Chapman and husband Roy of Dallas; two sisters-in-law, Jane Kelley and Anne Kelley, both of Lubbock, TX; fifteen grandchildren; and seventeen great-grandchildren. The family will be at 2616 Juniper. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Tyler Thornberry Memorial Fund, 4775 Pine Creek, El Paso, TX 79922; Amarillo College Foundation; Panhandle Plains Historical Society; or to First Christian Church.
