Bio

Thornton Ned Daily, loving husband, brother, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully after a very short illness on March 16, 2015. He will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife, Mary Jo, at the Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, California on April 1st. Ned was born on October 8, 1929 in New Hampton, Missouri to Fred and Frona (Slaughter) Daily. Ned moved to Bethany, Missouri in 1940 when his father was elected sheriff of Harrison County. He graduated from Bethany High School in 1948 and moved to California to work with his brothers Ross and Bob at Daily Saw Service. In 1950, Ned and his brother Ralph joined the US Marine Corps, and were sent to Korea where they saw heavy action as members of the First Marine Division in the battle of the Chosin Reservoir. Ned returned to the United States in 1951 where he was stationed at the Marine Corps Base at Barstow, California. It was during this time that he renewed his acquaintance with Mary Jo Myers, whom he had first met at school in Bethany. They were married in 1953 after Ned was honorably discharged from the Marines and he returned to work at Daily Saw Service. They lived in Downey, California where they raised two sons, Michael and David. Ned worked in the saw business with his brothers until 1979, when he retired to Fallbrook, California where he remained very active as an avocado grower, financial planner and volunteer fireman. In his final years, he prepared taxes for his family, friends and neighbors, and volunteered at the Fallbrook Hospital. He also greatly enjoyed participating in the Chosin Few, a veteran’s organization comprised of survivors of the Chosin Reservoir battle. Ned was universally respected for his integrity, common sense and great sense of humor. He loved people, and was dedicated to a life of service. His greatest joy was his family, and he will be deeply missed by his sister, Naomi (Daily) Walls, his son Michael, his son David and wife Barbara, and their children Jeff and wife Keegan, Matt and Chris and many, many extended family members and friends. Ned was preceded in death by his best friend and wife of 58 years, Mary Jo who passed away in 2011, and his siblings Lee, Glenn, Roberta, Ross, Bina, Bob, Ralph, Fred Jr, Charles, Betty, and Bill.
