Bio

Dorothy Ann Hiemer, 94, of Shelby, passed away Thursday, March 5, 2015, at Papillion Manor in Papillion. A Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 10, at Shelby Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will be in the Shelby Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Dubas Funeral Home of Osceola and Stromsburg has been entrusted with arrangements. Dorothy was born June 17, 1920. She was the youngest of six children born to John W. and Cecilia (Jaax) Gabriel in rural Polk County. She attended rural school District 68 and was a member of St. Andrew's Church. Dorothy met Leonard Hiemer at a dance at Eller's Hall. They were married May 27, 1941, at St. Andrew's. They attended dances through married life. Four children were born to this couple, Dennis, David, Margene and Donal. Dorothy remained on the farm after Leonard's death on July 6, 1989, until March 1994, a total of 53 years. She then moved into Shelby. She enjoyed her grandchildren very much. She loved playing cards. She was a member of Shelby Project Club, Shelby Sacred Heart Catholic Church, St. Ann's Guild and American Legion Auxiliary. For the past few years Dorothy has resided at Papillion Manor in Papillion. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leonard; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Hiemer; three brothers and two sisters. Memorials are suggested to the Shelby Senior Center, American Cancer Society or donor's choice.
