Helen Irene Hatfield Neff, eleventh and youngest child of Ulysses Grant Hatfield and Elizabeth Sarah Collins Hatfield was born March 12, 1922 in Decatur County, Iowa and passed away October 18, 2007 in Osceola, Iowa at the age of 85 years. Irene was educated in Decatur County and Clarke County Schools. As a young woman, she worked in the Van Wert and Weldon area and in Des Moines, Iowa. August 2, 1945, she was united in marriage to Lowell "Bud" Marvin Neff in a candlelight ceremony in the Christian Church in Des Moines. To this union one daughter, Ronda, was born. Irene was baptized in the First Federated Church in Des Moines. She was content to serve as a farmer's wife and helpmate with her husband on their farm in Knox Township. She and Bud loved to go to dances, out to dinner, visit with friends and relatives, and play cards and bingo. They spent many long evening playing cards and drinking coffee while canning vegetables from their garden. She enjoyed life to the fullest and everything that it had to offer. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lowell, in 1992; brothers: William Dewey Hatfield (Beulah), Benjamin Alva Hatfield, Thomas Wilbur Hatfield (Evelyn); sisters: Pearl Blondell Schuldt (Louis), Edith Dell Boles (Sherman), Jessie Marie Lee (Jack), Merle Lureta Davis (Clifford), Nealy Norton Murphy (Edwin) (John) and Leta Marie Boles (Zell); sisters-in-law, Fredine Hatfield, Becky Hatfield, and Mildred George; brothers-in-law, Arben Foland, Harold Crabb, Leland "Whitey" George and Clarence Neisemier. Irene is survived by her daughter, Ronda Surber and husband Gene of Osceola; two grandchildren, Lori Surber (Corey Garner) of Osceola, and Gregory Surber of Van Wert; three great-grandchildren, Lance Surber of Leon, Garett Garner and Calli Garner both of Osceola; honorary great-grandchildren, Brittany Jones and Tyler Jones both of Osceola; brother, Harlan Burbank Hatfield of Osceola; sisters-in-law; Myrtle Hatfield of Van Wert, Aleta McDaniel of Bethany, MO, Dorotha Foland, Oma Crabb and Edith Ann Neisemier all of Osceola and brother-in-law, Clarence Fenn of Murray as well as many other relatives and friends.
