Herald Coaster, February 12, 1978: Joseph Edward Cernoch, 28, of Needville, died at 10:15 p.m. Thursday, becoming the second Rosenberg police officer to be killed in the line of duty and the third law enforcement officer to die in the county in the past year. Cernoch died as a result of multiple injuries suffered in a Monday night accident. He had been on a life support system in the intensive care unit of Hermann Hospital in Houston. Cernoch married the former Paula Barrett of Katy in January 1975. The couple made their home in Needville at Route 1, Box 58-C. They had no children. Young Cernoch was a native of Fort Bend County, residing in Needville all his life. He graduated from Needville High School in May 1968 and upon graduation enlisted in the United States Air Force for four years. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Air Force, Cernoch attended Wharton County Junior College in Wharton for one year. It was then he decided he wanted to become a policeman. Cernoch enrolled at Texas A&M University in College Station to receive his 240 hours of police certification. He graduated from police certification school October 12, 1973, and was employed one month later as a patrolman with the Rosenberg Police Department. Pallbearers will be members of law enforcement agencies. All other law enforcement officers and friends will be honorary pallbearers. Law enforcement officers from all over the state are anticipated to attend the funeral. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Needville. Burial will be in Greennlawn Cemetery. Three priests will officiate. Joe was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Needville. The rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Davis & Dawson Funeral Chapel in Rosenberg. Friends may call until 9 a.m. Monday at the Davis & Dawson Funeral Chapel in Rosenberg. He is survived by his wife, Paula; his mother, Mrs. Mary Cernoch of Needville; two sisters, Mrs. Irene Dittrich of Houston and Mrs. Mary Demel of Schulenburg; and three brothers, Alois Cernoch of Rosenberg, Frankie Cernoch of El Campo, and Edward G. Cernoch of Needville. He was preceded in death by his father, Edward G. Cernoch, Sr., in May 1976.
