Bio

Martha Sumpter Cottingham, 79, of Moberly died Saturday, February 7, 2015 at the Fulton Manor Care Center. She was born August 6, 1935 in Moberly to Henry and Dolly (Redifer) Hess. Martha married Gerald Sumpter on December 5, 1952 at Cairo, MO and he preceded her in death on November 4, 1984. On October 25, 1986 she married Guy “Bud” Cottingham, Jr. and he preceded her in death on April 30, 2002. Also preceding her in death were her parents, a sister, Wanda Steel, a brother, Donald Hess and two grandsons, Michael and Terry Sumpter. Survivors include her children, Gerald Sumpter of Moberly, Terry Sumpter and his wife Sherry of Millersburg, MO Larry Sumpter and Curtis Stafford of Kansas City, Mo and Levi Cottingham of Moberly, five grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, two sisters, Mildred Brock and her husband Herbert of Moberly and Virginia Carter of Huntsville, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Martha will be remembered for her love of collecting china dolls. Words of comfort and support may be shared with the family at the visitation which will be Tuesday, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Cater Funeral Home. Services honoring and celebrating Martha’s life will be at 1:00 p.m. in the Cater Funeral Home Chapel, committal prayers and burial will follow at the Hagar Cemetery.
