Bio

Willa Jean Thomas, 90, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2015. Celebration of life services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. Perry Hunsaker and the Rev. Steve Stephens officiating. Private family burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Griggs-Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 S. Bell St. Willa, a resident of Amarillo since 1952, was born Aug. 13, 1924, in Belleville, Ark., to AC and Myrtle Buckman Sadler. She was the fourth of five children. The family moved to Carlsbad, N.M., where she graduated from high school in 1942. On Aug. 8, 1946, she married Roy W. Thomas after he returned from service in the Navy. Willa was a stay-at-home mom and active volunteer with Girls Scouts, Boy Scouts and St. Paul United Methodist Church, where she was active with United Methodist Women, played in the church handbell choir and was a founding member of Covenant Sunday school class. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy, after 48 years of marriage. Survivors include her children, Cheryl Lackey and husband Don of Burnet, Craig “Bear” Thomas of Amarillo and Ronetta Mills and husband Willie of Amarillo; her grandchildren, Christina Mills and Steven Thomas; her great-grandsons, Taylor Thomas and Gabriel Thomas; her stepgrandchildren, Steve Lackey and wife Cathy of Decatur, Donna Huerta of Dallas and Lynn Turner and husband John of Liberty Hill; 11 stepgreat-grandchildren; and a stepgreat-great- grandson. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to United Methodist Women of St. Paul United Methodist Church, 4317 W. Interstate 40, Amarillo, TX 79106, or 806-352-5615.
