Alabama Civil War Service Database: J C McCown enlisted Nov 15 1862 as a Private at Fayetteville, Tennessee in the 7th Alabama Cavalry, Unit K. He was honorably discharged May 9 1865. They were the parents of William Miller, John Lee, Sarah Icy, Edward Washington, and James Walter McCown. -- Born Lincoln County TN, Oct 29, 1843; Enlisted Nov 25, 1862, Fayetteville, TN; Married Elizabeth J. Smith, May 21, 1866 in Lincoln County, TN; Pension Application, Madison County, AL, 1897, 1899, age 58, Unable to make a living due to rheumatism, Unable to walk; Living in Delaney Texas, at least Mar-Nov 10, 1900; Nov 10, 1900 JCM wrote that "... Texas don't suit my rumatism"; Pension Application Madison County, AL, July 1903; Madison County Pension Board member wrote on July 23, 1903 that JCM did not have the use of his legs or his hands; Soldier's Home roster, June 16, 1905 (and every extant roster thereafter until his death); Letter JCM wrote from Soldiers' Home, Dec 22, 1906, "[The Home] is run so bad... We must be treated better or it [Soldiers' Home] will be done away with. The cooks and hired hands gets [sic] two thirds of what is appropriated for us and we get a poor living out of it..." (M.L.
