Bio

"Aunt" Norma Wollgast Haney was born and grew up south of Waller, Texas. She was the third daughter of Mary Baethe and Richard Wollgast. The two older daughters died as children and before she was born. Her brothers were Wallace and Ross. The Wollgast lived on a farm and they were a hard working people. They did what it took to survive on a farm and make a living. Aunt Norma could do anything anyone else could do on that farm. Her mother was a great minter for her and taught her to cook and sew and she even took piano lessons and became quite good at playing the piano. For entertainment she would play the piano at gathering and everyone would sing. They also they had such things as play parties and barbecues and family gathering. Also they would attend church. Aunt Norma became proficient as a seamstress and mastered the art of cooking. She was taught manners and protocol and she respected her father and her mother. She attended Highland Home School in Monaville, Texas. Monaville is a few miles west of her home place. She went as far as this school took her and was going to go to Waller School to finish the next year and her mother became so sick Aunt Norma had to forego going to school and take care of her mothers duties at home. She was also scheduled to go to Rice Institute after that. She also had the influence of her maternal grandmother Mary Baethe. I knew Mrs. Mary Baethe in her latter years before she pass away and she was a very fine lady.. Linda tells me that her mother uses to love to go with her father in the evening after the cattle. They would go out on horseback. She would help him bring the cows in or take them to another pasture. Aunt Norma saw my Uncle Giles Haney in Waller one time when she in Waller to shop. Uncle Giles also was in town on business and he saw her. He made a statement that he was going to marry that petty girl. "He probably made this statement to his brother Staton Haney, who was always with him when he went anywhere". Sure enough he did end up marrying her after a courtship. A man of his word. They had two children. In 1938 he and his brother Staton opened a store in Waller. They named it Haney Brothers. It was what was then called a General Merchandises store. They sold groceries and dry goods and feeds and ect. After Aunt Norma's Dad passed away her mother came to live with her and Uncle Giles. Uncle Giles father had died in 1934 and his brother Staton (who was handicapped) also came to live with them when they opened the store. Norma Haney past away on Friday, May 15, 1998 in the Holcombe Hospice, On Holcombe Blvd. at approximately 8:00 A.M. The Canon Funeral Home in Waller, Texas cared for her body. There was a grave side service for her with a viewing at 11:00 A.M. on May 18,1998 and she was laid to rest near her Mother and Father at the Hempstead Cemetery in Hempstead, Texas. After the grave side service everyone was invited to luncheon at The St. Johns Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall in Waller, Texas which the member of the church had prepared. This was the church that she belonged to since she was a child. She was always there when she was well and took part of every program she could. After the luncheon, there was a memorial service held at 2:30 PM in the Chapel of the Canon Funeral Home. The service was well attended by friends and family. Aunt Norma lived to be 86 years, 4 months and 30 days old. Submitted by her nephew J.B. Haney
