Bettie Erickson, 83, of Seney, Iowa passed away on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. with Rev. Dr. Jean Ziettlow and Reverend Peter Rosenkvist officiating. Interment will follow at the Seney Cemetery. Visitations with the family present will be after 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars followed by a 7:00 p.m. Prayer Service. Visitation will continue Wednesday morning at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time. Pallbearers will be Chad Kramer, Chris Erickson, Jake Erickson, Scott Snyder, Jeff Gordon, and Scott Rachuy. Bettie Louise Johanna Rieken was born May 13, 1931 on the family farm in Grant Township, rural Le Mars, Iowa to William H. and Viola W. (Weber) Rieken. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Brunsville. Bettie attended school at Grant Township #8 near Brunsville. As a young girl Bettie stayed home to assist her parents with the care of her younger siblings. Bettie was united in marriage to Walter G. Erickson on December 12, 1953 in Le Mars, Iowa. The couple lived briefly in Le Mars before settling in Seney, Iowa. Bettie had worked for Sheehan Produce and later for Hart Produce for several years before beginning her career at Harker’s where she worked until her retirement in 1992. She was a longtime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars and had taught Sunday School for nearly 25 years. She was also a longtime member of the Eagles Auxiliary of which she had served as President. Bettie enjoyed volunteering with the Eagle’s club wherever needed. Bettie also enjoyed fishing and playing cards. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her family and extended family. Bettie will be remembered as the matriarch of her family. She enjoyed the gatherings with her children, grandchildren, siblings, nieces and nephews. Survivors include her children: Diane Kramer and her husband Lee, Bruce Erickson and his wife Brenda, and Brian Erickson all of Seney; six grandchildren: Kim Gordon and her husband Jeff of Sioux City, Chad Kramer and his fiancé Kelli of Seney, Patricia Rachuy and her husband Scott of Seney, Jake Erickson and his friend Meghan of Mesa, AZ, Ashley Erickson and her friend Drew of Sioux City, Chris Erickson and his friend Dani of Shelby, Iowa and 8 great grandchildren. Survivors also include her siblings: Henry (Mary) Rieken of Merrill, Janet Rosenbaum of Elk Point, SD, Dennis Rieken and Pam Lynch of Le Mars; a brother-in-law, Jim Burnett of Seney and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, William H. and Viola W. (Weber) Rieken; her husband, Walter Erickson on December 9, 1990; a grandson, Brandon Erickson; a sister, Kathy Burnett; and a brother-in-law, Russell Rosenbaum. [Courtesy: Carlsen Funeral Homes]
