The Marion Register Tuesday February 11, 1903 OBITUARY. John S. Cooper was born in Morgan County, Ohio, 1834. Was married to Miss Rachel Murray of Ohio, came to Iowa in the fall of 1859, lived in Marion and surrounding country since. His wife died in December, 1869. Five children were born to them, four sons and daughter of which two survive him, Loren of Cedar Rapids and Samuel of Marion. Also leaves four brothers and one sister, Edward of Shelby, Iowa; Charles of Cushing, Iowa; Joseph and Francis of Kansas and Mrs. Mary Kirk of Kansas City, Mo. He enlisted in the Sixth Iowa Cavalry in 1862, served his country three years. He died Friday, February 6th and was buried Sunday at 2:30 p.m. from the Presbyterian church. The Cedar Rapids Evening Gazette Saturday February 7, 1903 John Cooper, one of Marion's old soldiers and settlers, died at his home in the northwest part of the city at 2:30 yesterday afternoon. Mr. Cooper was well up in the 70's and had been troubled with hearth disease for some time. The funeral will be held from the Presbyterian church tomorrow, Sabbath afternoon.
