Army Chaplain. Rev. Marcus Valenta was ordained as a priest Dec. 21, 1929 in Rome, was commissioned in the U.S. Army Chaplain's Corps in 1933 and began active duty in 1940. He was stationed in Hawaii when Pearl Harbor was bombed Dec. 7, 1941. He observed his 50th Jubilee of his ordination Nov. 25, 1979. Rev. Valenta served throughout World War II and participated in the Invasion of Okinawa on Easter Sunday, April 1, 1945. He was a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve until 1965 when he retired after 32 years of active military service as a Lt. Colonel. Rev. Valenta served at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Cuero, St. Ann's Catholic Church in San Antonio, St. Philip's Catholic Church in El Campo and at St. John's in Taiton before he was transferred to Praha in 1954. Rev. Valenta served as St. Mary's pastor for 25 years until 1979. He was chaplain of the National Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and a former national chaplain for the American Legion. He also served as chaplain of the American Legion Department of Texas in 1954-56 and 1969-70. Valenta was known across Texas for his part in planning the annual Veterans Day memorial service in Praha, where nine young servicemen from that community were buried after being killed in action in World War II.
