Neil Eugene Hipke, son of Roy and Sophia (Zweibel) Hipke, was born February 24, 1922, at Clarks, Nebraska. Neil's early years were spent on a ranch north of Atkinson, Nebraska. It was during this time that Neil met his wife-to-be, Maude Mellor . In December 1942, Neil joined what is now the United States Air Force, serving in the 8th and 9th Army Air Corps, attaining the rank of Corporal. He served in the European Theatre during World War II, and was assigned to duty in England, France, Belgium, and Germany. After receiving his Honorable Discharge in December of 1945, Neil returned to Nebraska where he helped his brother, George, on the Hipke Ranch south of Johnstown, Nebraska, working as a ranch hand. On December 5, 1948, Neil was married to Maude Carrie Mellor at the Mellor Ranch located north of Atkinson, Nebraska. The couple was blessed with three son. For the first 13 years of their marriage, Neil worked as a ranch hand and he and Maude rented land and started their family. In the spring of 1962, they purchased their own ranch along the Niobrara River. Neil and Maude spent close to 50 years on their ranch, where they watched their three boys grow up and start families of their own. Neil loved his cattle and the ranch life. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Neil was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maude Hipke (on April 10, 2013); parents, Roy and Sophia Hipke; and brothers, Lester Hipke, Russell Hipke, Reed Hipke, and Gordon Hipke.
