Great uncle Walter, and his brother James were farmers just as many Patrick's were a hundred years before them. They grew up in Richland TX. and helped run the Patrick Mercantile their dad James Thomas Patrick founded in 1869. Later Walter was employed in a saloon, but his passion was ranching, and being around horses. He used to ride for miles traveling from county to county, before the automobile became popular. After his dad had passed away, Walter and brother Jim (James) took over the mercantile, but continued there ranching and farming endeavors until the time of there deaths. Uncle Walter was the first real cowboy that I remember meeting, and the stories he used to tell allways kept a young boy excited. Walter had a reacurring dream all his life, about a man wearing a derby hat chasing him at night and trying to kill him. For this reason Walter for many years slept with a loaded pistol under his pillow. One night when his younger brother, my grand dad Arthur, was coming to bed Walter awoke with a start and thought it was the man with the derby. He fired his pistol, just missing his brother. The family unlodged the bullit from the outside of the house the next morning. The headboard to this day shows the gash where the bullit bounced off nearly ending my grandfathers life.
