Bio

Orville Jennings Richards, 75 August 24, 1908 ~ July 15, 1984 Orville's father, William M., was a farmer. Orville finished 8th grade, and as an adult, he didn't farm. Instead, he worked driving a highway maintainer (grader, with a blade, used on unpaved roads) in 1930, delivering ice to people's houses in 1940 and also working as an auto mechanic, and later, in 1942, serving as a helper for the Omaha Metropolitan Utilities District. In 1930, the US Census shows 21-year old Orville, his wife, Dorothy (20) and their 1-year old daughter, Joyce, living in William M's home. William was widowed, but still head of the home, and working as a farmer. However, tragedy struck. In 1940, the US Census shows the Richards living at 5601 51st street, in Omaha. Orville, now 31, was the head of the household (that year he was delivering ice for retail), but there is no mention of Dorothy. Instead, Orville was married again, but to Helen, who was a presser at a dry-cleaning establishment. Father William, now 71, was retired, and living with Orville. The 1940 US Census shows: Orville J, 31, head Helen, wife Arlene F. Richards, 16, step-daughter Arnold J. Richards, 13, step-son Joyce M. Richards, 12, daughter Deloris M. Richards, 6, daughter William M.
