From the source The Tyler Genealogy: The Descendants of the Branford, Connecticut Line of Roger Tyler by Willard I. Tyler Brigham & Calvin Cedric Tyler, Vol. III (1976): "As a young man Mr. Tyler was an attentive and keen observor of human nature, an ardent student, a seeker of truth, and a wide reader. He made his own opportunities himself, with little to assist him except his own personal equipment and indominable purpose to win and his heritage of fine ancestry. He studied architecture in New York City; supplemented his study with practical work with Mr. Hatfield and Leopold Eidlitz; became an architect and builder; was one of the earliest members of the American Institute of Architects instituted soon after 1850 and organized about 1856. Immediately following his marriage he removed to LaGrange, Georgia and pursued his profession with great success. Many beautiful buildings and private residences in the North and South were designed and built by him. A warm friendship existed between him and Sen. B. H. Hill of Georgia and Hon. Alexander H. Stephens, afterward Vice President of the Confederacy. Their correspondence continued until death intervened. With Mr. Stephens there was the added tie of blood, distant but mutual, recognized and felt. On account of strong anti-slavery convictions, Mr. Tyler returned to Massachusetts before the war."
