Bio
Thomas Uriah Craven, 87, of Shelton, formerly of Burwell, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2014, at Wedgewood Care Center in Grand Island. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River. Chaplain Mark Hartley will officiate. Burial of cremains will be in the Litchfield Cemetery at 3 p.m. Tuesday. Mr. Craven was born March 27, 1927, at Berwyn to James Thomas and Mary Elizabeth (Thomas) Craven. Survivors include three daughters, Terry Owens of Ravenna, Elizabeth and Bob Burke of Oakdale, Calif., and Kathy Webb; a sister, AnnaBelle Ruzicka of Oregon; a brother, Bernard Craven of Stuart; nine grandchildren, Scott Owens of Livermore, Calif., Steve Owens of Manteca, Calif., Staci and Jason Real of Shelton, Sheri and Jerry Wruble of Clarks, Debbie and Frank Farinelli of LeGrand, Calif., Donna Gardner of Livermore, Calif., Tammy Burke of Oakdale, Calif. and John Webb of Montana; 22 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren. He grew up in the Burwell area where he received his education. He entered the United States Army, June 19, 1945, serving during WWII. He was honorably discharged November 12, 1946. He was united in marriage to Joy Evone Kay, August 5, 1947. The couple made their home in Nebraska, California and Oregon. He was employed by Kay Truck Lines as a truck driver and was a ranch hand before moving to California, where he was employed by Bigge Drayage Company as a foreman/truck driver for 25 years. He later moved back to Nebraska and worked for various ranchers. He was a member of the Elks Club and various square dance groups. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Joy Craven; granddaughter, Katie Mendes; two sisters, Isabelle Mattern and Sarah Donner; and a brother, Bill Craven.
