Bio

Robert Leroy Kokes passed away suddenly on Monday, October 13, 2014 at his home in Hotchkiss, Colorado. He was 76 years of age. Robert was born to Lena (Dilsaver) and Edward Kokes, one of six sons, in rural Custer County, Nebraska on February 18, 1938. A short time later, the family moved to a sod house, later moving to a ranch where he grew up and graduated from Taylor High School. After graduation, he worked on his uncle's ranch, then at a manufacturing plant in Ogallala, Nebraska. He bought a rebuilt Taylorcraft airplane and started taking flying lessons. This led him to his hobby of building helicopters. Later on, he moved to Wichita, Kansas where he worked at a small airport. In 1958, Robert married Patricia Du-Pree; two children were born to this union. They later divorced. In 1967, Robert moved to Denver and worked for Sundstrand Aviaion as a machinist. In 1974, he bought an orchard in Paonia, Colorado. In 1978, he purchased part of the Ray Bruce orchard. In 1993, Robert married Maxine Bruce Morrow. They lived on the orchard until selling it in 2006, then moved to Hotchkiss. Robert is survived by his wife, Maxine; one daughter, Sally (Daniel) Palletier, of Grand Junction; one son, Roger, of Delta; four brothers: Edwin, Eldon (Bonnie) and Garry, all of Grand Island, NE, and Jim, of Lincoln, NE; one grandson, Mikle (Nina) Kokes, of Grand Junction; one granddaughter, Christina (Brian) Stinnett, of Colorado Springs; and five great-grandchildren: KeAndre, Carmine, and Mikle Kokes and Justin and Kelsey Tinnett. Robert was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, LeeLand Trowbridge Kokes; and one brother, Larry Kokes. Viewing for family and friends will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 17, 2014 at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Hotchkiss, Colorado. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 17, 2014 at Bethlehem Cemetery, with James Gall officiating.
