Published in The Sierra Vista Herald (September 28, 2014): James "Jim" Hubert Abell, 92, of Portland, Ore., died peacefully Sept. 21, 2014, at his Sierra Vista, Ariz., home, in the company of loved ones. Mr. Abell was born Nov. 3, 1921, in Hugo, Colo., to John S. Abell and Bertha M. Meyer. He attended Hugo High School in Hugo, Colo., and continued his education at Oregon State University, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering. He loved mathematics and was part of Oregon State's National Honor Society for Mathematics and the National Honor Society for Electrical Engineers. After college Mr. Abell was drafted into the US Army anti-aircraft unit and served from August 1942 through December 1945, at which time he received an honorable discharge for his service. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, and playing cribbage with his family and friends. He was really good at stacking the deck in his favor! He enjoyed spending time with his family most and seeing them while attending reunions in the Oregon area. He is survived by his sister, Halie Mauer; his son, Samuel Abell and his wife Claudia Abell of Sierra Vista; grandchildren, Jason Abell (wife, Audrie), Ryan Abell (wife, Kristin), Lanaya Sherry (husband, Matthew), Kata McCoy (husband, Lonney), and Shawn Abell; and too many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins to mention by name. He was preceded in death by his father, John S. Abell; his mother, Bertha M. Meyer; his wife, Rowena M. Martin-Abell (1993); siblings, Tony Abell, Mary Catherine Rice, and Dorothy Shimp; and sons, John T. Abell (1948) and Daniel J. Abell (2009). Arrangements are with Hatfield Funeral Home in Sierra Vista and Unger's Funeral Home in Silverton, Ore.
