De Leon Free Press Dec 30, 1938 Front page Death Came to Alexander Gilchrest Near Here Dec. 14 Alexander Gilchrest was born September 16, 1866 in Clark County, Alabama. He came to Texas at the age of 16, and was married to Miss Allie Caraway October 22, 1890. To this union was born eight children, four of whom preceded him in death. Those who are yet living are Forest Gilchrest, Marlen Gilchrest, Mrs W. L. Thomas and Mrs. W. L. Wolfenbarger. There are 19 living grandchildren, four deceased and one great grandchild. Mr. Gilchrest united with the Methodist Church and later joined the Primitive Baptist, holding membership with them about36 years. At the time of his death his membership was with the De Leon Church. He was 72 years 3 months and 3 days old. Funeral services were conducted by Eld. S. W. Short, assisted by Eld. Lem Dalton of Hamilton. His remains were laid to rest in the De Leon Cemetery by the side of his wife who passed away about five years ago. He was a good man, a good husband and a good father. He was an active church member until affliction seized his body and he was not able to attend church for the past 5 or 6 years. Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord and we sure such was his condition. The family, neighbors and friends have our sympathy and may God's mercy and Blessings rest upon them. The funeral service was conducted at the cemetery at 3:00 o'clock p.m. on Monday, December 19.
