He was adopted when very young by Darling and Matilda Brand and given the name of John Brand. His birth name was Loren Legrand Steen and his birth parents were Legrand Steen and Harriet Becker. This information came from the 1936 Old Age Assistance Rolls of Clarke County, Iowa and John Brand himself was the enumerator!
