Irene C. Fenton, 82, died peacefully Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006. She was a resident of the Crest Nursing Home at the time of her death. Irene was born Nov. 25, 1923, in Ashton, Neb., to Ben J. and Mary Ann (Koslicki) Jasnoch. On June 6, 1944, she married Henry Fenton of Topeka, Kan., and together they raised five children in Butte; Henry died Feb. 15, 1973. Irene began her teaching career in Nebraska. She received her Montana Teachers Certificate by attending summer classes at Carroll College while still raising her family. She taught at St. Ann's, Grant School, and Margaret Leary School. After retiring from teaching, Irene worked several years at K-Mart in the lay-away department. At the time of her death, she was working for the Foster Grandparents Program at Head Start. She was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion auxiliaries, serving as state president of the Ladies VFW Auxiliary and as National Color Bearer. Besides her husband, Irene was preceded in death by her parents; son, James Lee; granddaughter, Debra Janeen; sister, Delores; brothers, Leonard, Larry, and Johnny. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Ted Spanbauer of Anaconda; sons and daughters-in-law, David and Maureen Fenton of Houston, Texas, Henry Fenton of Helena, Bernard and Nancy Fenton of Marble, Colo., Duane Fenton of Green River, Wyo.; brother and sisters-in-law, Richard and Arlee Jasnoch of Grand Island, Neb., and Rose Jasnoch of Loup City, Neb.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Irene's remains are in Wayrynen-Richards Funeral Home, where friends may call beginning at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Thursday, with interment to follow in Mountain View Cemetery.
