Bio

Samuel Joseph Hawkins is the son of Joseph Irvin and Elizabeth Burger Hawkins both buried in Tennessee. Born in Middle, Tennessee in 1877 per most census records. Note: Middle, Tennessee is not a town, however is a designation of a section of Tennessee. Most records have Cannon County, Tennessee as his birth, and residence until he came to Texas. His death certificate has him born in 1879. I used the year 1877 as it fits the earlier records. Informant was J E Hawkins. On 11/4/1906 Sam married Mary Ida Branch McKinney (Mrs. William C) in Hill County, Texas. They had three sons. Alex Fletcher Hawkins, Louie Grafton Hawkins and Jack Hawkins. They are together on the 1920 Hill County, Texas census. The 1930 Lamb County, Texas census finds Sam divorced living with his 14 year old son, Jack. I did not find Sam on the 1940 census, however it is believed he remained in Lamb County until his death in 1950. Sam's death certificate indicates his residence as Olton and burial in Olton Cemetery. He died April 3, 1950 in an Amherst hospital per his obit and death certificate.
