Martin Luther Greathouse was born January 15th, 1838 to John L and Catherine "Caty" (Hoover) Greathouse. He worked on his father's farm in Pike County as a laborer until age 24 when he enlisted in the military, serving in Company K, 7th Regiment of the Missouri Infantry (Union) during the civil war. He was captured by confederate soldiers at Holly Springs, and after that suffered from chronic nephritis. He spent the rest of the war stationed at the Army Hospital where he worked as a cook until he was discharged for disability near the end end of his 3 year term in 1865. He returned to Pike County, and worked as a veterinary surgeon. He married Sarah Jane Watson, daughter of Nathan and Sarah (Turnbaugh) Watson. They had two daughters, John Belle and Montana, who married brothers Otis and Mate Smitherman. At age 70, he began collecting a military disability pension. He was predeceased by his daughter Monte and his wife Jane. He passed away at 79 and his estate was left to his daughter Bell Smitherman. He was buried at French cemetary in Pike County, Illinois. Martin had nine siblings: Martha, who married George Thomas Moore Mary, who married a man named Kennedy Rebecca M, who married Jacob Spencer Peer John C. Miriam T., who married John Taggert Dorcas Avaline., who married David Harrison Johnston Zerepta, who married Alexander B. Johnston (they later moved to Missouri) William H.
