Bio
Howard Lee Cotter, 85, passed away on Thursday, July 4, 2013, at his home in Ovalo. A graveside service, with military honors, will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, July 8, 2013, at the Abernathy Cemetery in Abernathy, Texas, directed by Fry~Bartlett Funeral Home, Tuscola. A visitation for Howard will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 7, 2013, at the funeral home. Howard was born to William Rueben and Mattie Jane (Bingham) Cotter on May 29, 1928, in Big Spring. He graduated from Littlefield High School and entered the United State Navy in April of 1946 and served in Hawaii during the occupation of Japan. He married Velma Lue Stone on Aug. 8, 1952. Howard was employed and retired from GTE in the spring of 1987 at Abernathy. During his career with GTE he worked in Hobbs, N.M, San Angelo, Levelland, and Abernathy. He belonged to the VFW and the Communication Workers of America. He was a Baptist. After retirement he moved from Levelland to Ovalo to be closer to his family. Howard tinkered with old antiques, from tractors to washing machines or anything that caught his interest. He was a truly gifted artist when it came to working with wood. He has been referred to a perfectionist with his woodworking skills. He was a supporter of Jim Ned football, basketball, FFA, and the Indian Band. He also was a member of the Vickie's Coffee Club, which met daily. He is survived by his daughter, Janie Crawford and husband Danny of Lawn; grandson, Quade Cotter Crawford of Lawn; brother, Jerry Cotter of San Angelo; and sister, Billie Simnacher of Lubbock; and a special friend, Betty Van Meter of Hobbs, N.M.
