Bio

Priscilla Jeanne Hensley Spilman [first name of Helen appears on 1930 Census] was born on November 23, 1924 in Fort Worth, Texas, the daughter of Dewey Charles and Julia Louise Hensley. After her father suffered a debilitating injury, she was raised from early adolescence by Fae Lockett , a friend of the Hensley family and a legal stenographer for Judge Wardlow , the family’s attorney. As a young woman, she worked as a fashion model in New York City. Later, she was a civil service employee with United States Military forces in the occupation of Japan following World War II. While in Japan, she met Robert B. Spilman, USMA Class of 1942. On Christmas Eve, December 24, 1947, they were married in Hokkaido, Japan. They were the parents of four children. The family was stationed in North Carolina, Texas, Colorado, Georgia, Florida, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Oslo, Norway. She was active in the arts community and established a career selling real estate. Her husband retired from the United States Army after 30 years of service. Following retirement he began a civil service career with the United States Navy. In 1974, they settled in Pensacola Florida. She died at age 87 on Tuesday morning, January 24, 2012 at West Florida Regional Hospital where she had been admitted for observation and treatment following a heart attack. Known as NanaGram to her family, she was survived by her husband Bob; two sons and one daughter-in-law; two daughters and sons-in-law; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; many relatives and friends. Private memorial services were held at Faith Chapel in Pensacola, Florida. Arrangements were by Faith Chapel Funeral Home South at 100 Beverly Parkway in Pensacola.
