Joseph W Hammack came to Texas with his brother, William K Hammack after the 1880 census from Alabama. He and his brother married sisters, Eugenia and Buelah Mays in Bell County, Texas. He married in 1889 and his brother in 1888. William K Hammack and his family moved to Hardeman County, Texas but it is believed that Joe and his family continued to live near Rogers in Bell County. Joe was the Public Weigher for PCT 4 in Bell County according to a publication of the Texas Secretary of State in 1896. The last record found relating to him is the 1920 census. His wife's death certificate indicates that he was still alive in 1924. No grave marker has been located for him or his wife, but it is believed that he died after 1924 and was buried with his wife in the Rogers City Cemetery. He was the father of four known children.
