Bio

Clarice Kathryn Stelling, 99, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2014 at her daughter's home in Pocatello, Idaho. Services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, Grand Island, NE on Saturday, July 5, 10:30am with Pastor Jack Gillam officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Scotia, NE. All Faiths Funeral Home is handling the funeral arrangements. Survivors of the immediate family are son, Larry (Cathy Lynn), Grand Island, NE, daughter Kathryn (Michael Schuessler), Milwaukee, WI, daughter Pamela (Gregg Clark), Pocatello, ID, and stepdaughter, Kathy (Vic Auftumberge), Grand Island, NE. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 13 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A true pioneer in life and in spirit, our beloved mother was born on December 10, 1914 to Allen and Emma Mann on the family ranch west of Burwell. She was baptized in the Christian faith and later confirmed in the Lutheran Church. She was the second oldest of five children. Mom loved the beautiful Nebraska Sandhills, wildflowers and ranch life. She developed a strong faith and work ethic as they struggled to maintain the ranch after the early death of their father and onset of the Depression. She attended rural school and graduated from Taylor High School in 1931. Mom completed "Normal School" training at age 18 and taught in one room rural schools for eight years. She took continuing education classes at the University of Nebraska. Mom was married to Dale Bredthauer, a WWII veteran and GMC Dealer, on Feb. 3, 1946. To this union three children were born, Larry, Kathryn, and Pamela. They made their first home in Burwell, Ne. Mom's sweetheart and children were her life. She proudly said that her greatest achievement was loving her family. The family moved to Grand Island in 1957 when Dale expanded his dealership to include the sale of semi-trucks. To Mom's great sorrow, Dale was called home in 1972 after a valiant fight with cancer. She tirelessly sat by his bedside to comfort her aching heart. Being a widow with three children in college was a challenge for her, but her strong faith saw her through. Later, to ease the loneliness, Mom found satisfaction in working part-time as a teller at Five Points Bank. In 1979 Mom married Albert R. Stelling, president of Five Points Bank. They shared a strong Lutheran faith and a love of traveling. Albert passed away in 1986. Mom was a long time member of Trinity Lutheran Church and enjoyed teaching Sunday school and Vacation Bible School and serving in Ruth Society. She loved bowling and playing cards with her friends. Being a widow for a number of years her friends meant a lot to her. She was most comfortable in her kitchen and yard. Like her mother she was a good manager, thrifty, and resourceful. Needlework occupied her hands during the long winter months and each grandchild gratefully received an afghan hand crocheted by Grandma! She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, Dale Bredthauer and Albert Stelling, three brothers, Ralph, Glen and Arthur, one sister Dorothy, a granddaughter (Allison Jones), and a great grandson (Brannigon Bredthauer).
