Bio
Avis Marie Bates Daniel, 87, of Bastrop, LA, formerly of Ashley County, died Saturday, January 21, 2006, at St. Francis North Hospital in Monroe, LA. A retired teacher and coach, teacher of the year at Westside Math Lab and retired from Cherry Ridge Christian School, she was a member of Kappa Kappa Iota and Cherry Ridge Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the choir. Survivors include her husband, Roy Daniel; one daughter, Sue Bates Lyles and husband Don of Pharr, TX; one son, Eugene Bates and wife Brenda of Roswell, GA; two stepdaughters, Judy Smith and husband Bob and Alette Stull and husband Terry, all of Senatobia, MS; one stepson, Curtis Daniel and wife Donice of Forest City; one sister, Addie Daniel of Bastrop; one brother, Horace High of Bastrop; four grandchildren, Kregg Roy of West Monroe, LA, Brent Roy of Calhoun, LA, Todd Bates of Alpharetta, GA and Bryan Bates and wife Yvonne of Atlanta, GA; five great-grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, 11 step-great-grandchildren, three step-great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Catherine High of Hamburg; one son-in-law, Charles Roy of Calhoun; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie Thad Bates; her parents, Ed and Hattie High; and nine brothers and sisters. Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 24, at 1 p.m. at Cherry Ridge Baptist Church with Rev. Cal Adams officiating. Burial was at Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Golden Funeral Home of Bastrop. Pallbearers were Johnny Lee Moreland, Lawrence Nugent, Terry Stull, Bob Smith, Glenn Daniel and Billy Daniel. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Robert Lyon, Dr. Russ Greer, Chipper West and members of Avis and Roy's bowling team.
