Bio

Archibald Thompson was the son of Henry Butt Thompson Sr. and Margaret McCoy-Thompson. He was the brother of Henry B. Thompson Jr (1788-1864) and William Thompson (1795-1840). Margaret McCoy was the granddaughter of Joshua McCoy Jr and Sarah Elizabeth Butt. Her husband was the son of John Thompson and Alsey Butt, so they were 2nd cousins. Margaret's mother was Sally McCoy a half blood Chickasaw and her father Atahobia a full blood Yowani Choctaw. That making Archibald 1/4 Choctaw and 1/8 Chickasaw. The balance was Scot-Irish and English. Archibald was married three times, the first to Elizabeth Jackson (a Choctaw Indian) with whom he had five children: (1) Frances McCoy (1818-1878) who married Tyra B. Finley (2) Elizabeth "Lettie" (b. ca. 1821) who married a Jackson (3) James William (1822-aft 1870) who married Elizabeth Coats (4) Seleta (1824-1891) who married James Coats (5) Absolem Archibald Henry Thompson (1825-1864) who married Susan Coats. AAH Thompson is buried next to his in the Asbury Cemetery. His next wife was Nancy Islea. Little is known about her, or if he had any children with her. The late Cecil (Pinkston) Vinson, noted she was a Caddo Indian. If they had children they most likely went west with the Caddo to the Brazos Reservation and then into SW Oklahoma. His third and final wife was his first cousin Annie Strong Thompson (non-Indian), who is buried next to him at Asbury Cemetery. She was the daughter of his uncle John Thompson and his wife Mary (Strong). From this union he had six children: (1) John Thurston (1829-1864), killed at the battle of Jenkins Ferry, who married Mary Jane Kerr (2) Hugh McCoy "Mack" (1831-ca. 1866) who married 1. Nancy Slocum & 2. Eliza A. Blackwell (3) Nicholas Butt (1832-aft 1870) married Mary Jane Denton (4) Alsey Ann (1835-) who married Ole Lee Nelson (5) Martha Strong (1836-1920) who married her cousin Thomas Umphres Thompson, son of Henry B. Thompson Jr. & Percilla Jackson. She (Percilla) being the sister of Archibald's first wife, Elizabeth. (6) Sarah Melissa (1839-1915) who married William Henry Dean He settled originally in Rusk County as a part of the Mount Tabor Indian Community but later bought lands just across the Smith County line near Overton.
