Doodle was born February 12, 1938 in Kaufman County, Texas to Dempsie and Virgie Elston. He was raised in the Styx/Peeltown area and attended school in Styx and Kemp. He married Barbara Rhodes in Kaufman, Texas in 1954. At the time of their marriage, Doodle was working as a welder at James Tool Company in Dallas, where he remained for the next 30 years. Story has it Virgil was nicknamed "Doodle Bug" by his father as a result of his tendency to crawl backward when he was a baby, and the name affectionately "stuck" with him the rest of his life. Doodle died at approximately 5:00 AM Friday, July 4th, in the Corsicana Hospital after complications from seizures approximately a week earlier. May he be free from years of suffering, and rest in peace. He will be missed. Preceding him in death were his parents, Dempsie Virgil and Virgie Mae (Brewer) Elston, and grandson, Donnie Lee Elston. He is survived by his sons, James Glenn Elston and his wife Debbie of Axtel, TX, and David Lynn Elston and his wife Twaila of Malone, TX; 4 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; sister, Margie Tarpley and her husband Jeff of Kemp; and other relatives and friends.
