Marie was born in Moravia (Czechoslovakia) in 1881. She was the 2nd child of Mary and Paul Kuban. The firstborn was a sister named Anicka born 1879 but died at age 6 months. In 1892 the family, which at that time consisted of father, mother and 8 children, sailed from Bremanhaven to America on the ship "Trave" and landed in New York. From there they took a freighter ship to Galveston, TX, then took a train to Columbus, TX. By now it is 1893. From Columbus, TX they traveled by horse and wagon and settled near what is present day Nada, TX. Marie wanted to become a nun. She became ill days before she was scheduled to leave with the priest. Marie died of "congested fever" in June of 1899 at the age of 17 or 18. She died the exact day and hour she was to leave with the priest to join the convent. Her mother was also sick at the same time but recovered. This information is from a family history book titled "The Fates of the Immigrants - the History of a Czech Family in America" written by Marie's brother Joseph Kuban approximately 1933-1934. Information is being submitted by Stacy "Bartosh" Power who is a great-great granddaughter to Mary and Paul Kuban Contributor: Stacy "Bartosh" Power (49383727)
