Bio

Alva H. (Smokey) Garland, 92, died Nov 18, 1980 in Waco TX. Services at Rosemound Cemetery. Mr. Garland was born Dec 31, 1887 in Pilot Grove TX. In August 1911 he married Belulah May Mackey in Dallas TX. He was an entrepreneur starting the first taxi in Dallas in 1911 and working with until 1930. Then he was employed with Katy Railroad from 1944 until retirement in 1967. With his railroad skills he built and operated the miniature train in Cameron Park, which later was relocated to Lions Park in Waco. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Fireman. Survivors: his wife, Mrs. Beulah Garland of Waco TX; daughter, Mrs. Opal L. Carder of Waco TX, son, Forest W. Garland of Gilham ARK; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Waco Tribune Herald 11-20-1980 ^
