James was the son of Bob Drake. His mother's name was Anna Belle Coleman. He was born in Olustee, Oklahoma. He married Edith Lorene Powers on 24 Dec 1922 in the Pleasant Valley community in Jackson County, Oklahoma. They were parents of five daughters. He worked for the Frisco Railroad.
