Bio

Johann (John) was married to Amalie (Braun) on 21 Dec 1860 in Fayette CO. TX. They had 10 children. ~ Johann Althaus was a German emigrant who came to Texas in 1854. In his native Prussia his full given name was Johann Jost, but in America most records referred to him simply as John. John was born on February 28, 1835 in the village of Benfe. This community lies about 54 miles east of Cologne, West Germany. Nothing is known of his parents except that they were Jost Heinrich Althaus and Maria Magdalene Herling. He sailed 75 days from Bremen, Germany on the passenger vessel "Galliott Concordia"ending in Galveston on November 25, 1854; his destination is noted as Fayette County. As shown in the marriage license records of Washington County, John J. Althaus married Amalia Braun on December 21, 1860. John was known to have been a "tischler", which is the German word for carpenter or furniture maker. He built and helped remodel several houses on the LaBahia Prairie. According to his son Otto, John was not a leather-worker as had been alleged by some. Otto, John's son, relates that his father suddenly developed diarrhea one evening while playing skat, became violently ill and promptly died. The presumed diagnosis was "choler morbus". The date was October 31, 1889. He was buried in the LaBahia Cemetery. The grave maker stands northeast from his wife, Amalia, on a bare grassy slope.
