Thanks to contributor #48796369 John E. Murphy, 72, of Omaha, formerly of Grand Island, died Thursday, April 20, 2000, at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Cathedral in Grand Island. The Rev. Frank Hoelck will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., with a 7 p.m. wake service, Wednesday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the family. Mr. Murphy was born on July 6, 1927, at Greeley to Ernest and Josephine (Farrell) Murphy. He moved with his family to Grand Island, where he graduated from St. Mary's School in 1945. He served in the U.S. Navy from April 1945 to June 1946. He then attended Creighton University in Omaha. He married Blanche C. Caffrey on Sept. 1, 1951, at Grand Island. He worked as a brakeman for the Union Pacific Railroad until he was injured on the job. He later operated his own businesses — Pastime Café and Paddock Lounge. He owned thoroughbred horses and trained them for others. Mrs. Murphy died in 1996. Mr. Murphy was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors include two daughters, Kathleen of Omaha and Colleen Murphy-Hartin of Mahomet, Ill.; and three grandsons. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Ernest; and three sisters, Lavina Hickey, Marranna Arnett and Laurentia Rourke. The Grand Island Independent, April 26, 2000
