Bio

Grand Island (Nebraska) Daily Independent Wednesday, 3 September 1952 Ernest R. Murphy, 68, of 415 West Charles, a former carpenter's foreman at the Cornhusker Ordnance Plant and a former resident of Greeley County, died early this morning in the family home. He had been in failing health for the last two years. Funeral rites will be held at 9:30 Friday morning in St. Mary's Cathedral. Burial will be in a local cemetery. Mr. Murphy was born on May 15, 1884, at New Regal (sic), Ohio, to Mr. and Mrs. Bernard J. Murphy. When he was a child of two, the family moved west and settled in Greeley County. It was there that Mr. Murphy received his education and grew to manhood. He and Miss Josephine F. Farrell were married on July 12, 1910, at O'Connor. They began there home in Greeley. Mr. Murphy was a carpenter and builder there for many years. The family came to Grand Island in 1942. Mr. Murphy was employed as a carpenter's foreman in the construction of the air base and the ordinance plant. Illness caused his retirement in August of 1950. Mr. Murphy was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral parish. His only social affiliation was with the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife; two sons, Ernest R. Murphy, Jr., and John E. Murphy, both of Grand Island; three daughters, Mrs. John Arnitt (sic) and Mrs. William G. Moore, Jr., both of Grand Island and Mrs. Daniel Hickey, St. Louis, Mo.; and ten grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Samuel B. Murphy, Wilfred G. Murphy, Emmett A. Murphy, and Charles B. Murphy; and one sister, Mrs. Lorette Fitsimmons. The rosary will be recited at 7:30 Thursday evening in the Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home...
