Bio

The Arizona Daily Star, Tucson, 3 January 2006 Eula Gale Elledge A True Pioneer Woman Eula Gale Elledge, affectionately known to her family as "Grandmo," passed away January 1st in Tucson, Arizona, after a brief illness. Born January 15th, 1906, in Franklin, which was part of Arizona Territory at the time, Eula witnessed almost a century of history in the American southwest. Her parents, William and Ella Gale, arrived by covered wagon before settling in the territory along the Gila river near the present border with New Mexico. Her parents being farmers, Eula spent her childhood on the farm learning the value of hard work. She also recognized the importance of education, and received her elementary education in a small frontier school in Franklin. Later, she daily drove a horse and buggy a distance of three miles to attend high school in Duncan. The school burned down after only her second year and she was forced to travel a greater distance to Silver City, New Mexico. While attending school in New Mexico, Eula's distinctive height and talent earned her a spot on the New Mexico Normal School basketball team, where she starred. During this time, she met Charles D. Elledge, whom she married on June 27, 1923. They had two sons: Edwin Elledge, presently of Sierra Vista, Arizona, and Wayne Elledge, currently in Tucson. Eula and Charles's first home was in Tyrone New Mexico where Charles worked as a carpenter for the Phelps Dodge Corporation. A job transfer for the same company moved them to Morenci, Arizona, and finally to Coolidge, Arizona where they became one of the original inhabitants. The years of the Depression were very difficult for the couple's little family, but the lessons learned from Eula's pioneering background and extreme hard work by both parents allowed them to provide all that was needed. Eula found employment all over the Florence-Coolidge area eventually retiring from the Valley National Bank after many years of service. Eula's life has always been one of service. She provided nurture and support to her family, greater family, friends, church and neighbors. She personally cared for her mother in her home for 17 years before her death at age 96. She leaves a great legacy of love and responsibility to all of her descendants, and will be remembered and loved by them all. Eula is survived by her two sons; 8 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren. Services will be held on Thursday January 5th at 10:00 a.m. with a viewing to be held an hour beforehand. The service will be located at the chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at 939 West Chapala Drive in Tucson. Interment will be at the LDS Pioneer Cemetery at 4001 N. Alvernon, also in Tucson. Funeral services will be provided by ADAIR MORTUARY.
