Mary Frances King Simmons, age 81, of Dallas, TX, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 17, 2014. She was born in Birmingham, AL to Acie Olen King and Gladys Whitlock King on January 5, 1933. She graduated from Woodlawn High School and Howard College (now known as Samford University), where she was a member of Phi Mu Sorority. After college she was a teacher in Columbia, SC and Royal Oak, MI where she met and married her husband in Detroit on June 1, 1955. They moved to Dallas in 1958 and she taught as a 6th grade elementary teacher until her retirement after 31 years of dedicated service. After retirement she continued as a substitute teacher for 11 years and was on the executive board of the Dallas Retired Teachers Association. She also volunteered for over 12 years at Presbyterian Hospital and was a member of the Shepherd's Center and Dallas Elks Ladies. She loved her dog, Sparky, and enjoyed gardening, traveling, reading, singing, dancing, movies, and attending First Baptist Church of Dallas. She will be remembered for her big smile, laugh, loving sweet nature, her passion for education, and her steadfast love and devotion to her family. She was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Alfred E. Simmons, and her sister Sarah King Tucker. She is survived by her son, Alfred (Allen) King Simmons of Dallas, TX, and her nephew, Dr. N H (Bo) Tucker and his wife Kathy of Jacksonville, FL, niece Lois Tucker Trussell and her husband Tim Trussell of Pike Road, AL, as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. The family would like to thank Friends Place, Walnut Place and Faith Hospice for their excellent care. A family graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 10, 2014 at Forest Hill Cemetery in Birmingham, AL. Published in Dallas Morning News on Apr. 27, 2014
