Per military records, Private Charles H. Bird, son of Martin and Millie Jane Bird, was born in June, 1898, in Crawford County, Indiana. He was working as a farmer at the time of enlistment. He enlisted in U.S. Regular Army on May 7, 1917, at Evansville, Ind. He was then sent to Jefferson Barracks, Mo., and assigned to Company A, 6th Infantry. He was also assigned to Company A, 53rd Infantry, 2nd Training Battalion, 26th Infantry; and Company D, 26th Infantry. He departed with his regiment for France on January 12, 1918. Charles was killed in action on July 20, 1918, at Soissons, France. This soldier was originally buried in France, but was returned to the U.S. and buried here in March of 1922.∼Son of Martin and Millie Jane Bird. Sailed for France Jan. 12, 1918. Killed in action Soissons, France.
