AMES, Iowa — Roy W. Kuhn, 87, of Ames, Iowa, died on Thursday, April 17, 2014, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. A gathering of friends will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday at the Community Hall in Hordville with graveside services at 1 p.m. at Fridhem Lutheran Church Cemetery. Adams Funeral Home in Ames is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Kuhn was born on Jan 31, 1927, in Central City to Leonard and Nellie Mae (Mohr) Kuhn. He married Esther L. (Benson) Kuhn on July 16, 1949. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife; and two daughters, Kristi Kuhn of Papillion and Tami Kuhn of Ankeny, Iowa. Also left to cherish his memory are many nieces and nephews. After graduating from Central City High School, he enlisted in the United States Army on June 16, 1945, serving overseas during World War II until returning on Nov. 25, 1946. He graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1954 with a degree in civil engineering. He began working for the state of Iowa Department of Transportation in 1954 in Sheldon, Iowa. He was then transferred to Rock Rapids. He moved to Ames in 1964 with his family, which by then included two daughters, Tami and Kristi. After 39 years with the IDOT, Roy retired, after completion of the first cable-stayed bridge built in Iowa at Burlington. Throughout his life, he enjoyed bowling, square dancing, golf and watching sports. Roy was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Archie Kuhn, who lost his life In World War II, and Leon Kuhn; and four sisters, Pearl Schlitt, Eva Hanner, Luella Lunsford and Mary Sanderson.
