William James Easterwood was born in Webster County, MS, on June 20, 1842. He was raised on a farm, and was the son of Robert and Eliza E Easterwood. He joined the Confederate Army, Co. K, 15th MS, on July 15, 1861, and was assigned to Zollicoffer's brigade. His first battle ws at Fishing Creek, KY, where they were overpowered by the northern forces, retreated at night across the Cumberland river and retired to Corinth, MS. His next battle experience was at Shiloh where he was shot in the left hip with a minie ball which has never been taken out. After his recovery from this wound he was in a number of minor battles. He was in the battle at Franklin, TN, where Hood commanded the TN army. They charged the northern entrenchments; when they had almost reached them they ran into a line of wooden spikes set in the ground as a hedge. It was impossible to pass this barrier. While attempting to pull up the sharpened stakes he received a shot in the left leg which shattered the bone near the ankle. That put him out of the war. After the war he resumed farming. He went to Texas in 1894, stopping for about eight months in Arkansas along the way. He lived in Falls County, TX for most of his life since coming to Texas, but in 1911 he built himself a home in Temple, Bell County, TX, where he lived until his death. He was married to Alexandra M. Josie McClendon. She died January 26, 1896, in Georgetown, TX. He had three sons, William Robert Emmett, b. 1868; Thomas James Monroe, b. 1871; and Herbert Benjamin, b. 1883.
