Bio
Sally Jean Cowger was born on March 3, 1934, in Omaha, Nebraska. She was the daughter of Stuart and Katherine (Getscher) Horak. Sally was baptized as an infant at Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church in Omaha, Nebraska, and was later confirmed in her faith as a youth at St. John's Lutheran Church in Des Moines, Iowa. She was a graduate of the Urbandale High School Class of 1951. Sally furthered her education at Iowa State University and the University of Wisconsin River Falls and received a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1976. She received her Master of Education from the University of Minnesota in 1986. On June 12, 1954, Sally was united in marriage to Robert Cowger at St. John's Lutheran Church in Des Moines, Iowa. This marriage was blessed with four children, Lynda, Patricia, David and Daniel. Sally and Robert resided in Farmington and Cyrus, Minnesota. They later moved to Hutchinson, Minnesota in 1995. They shared 42 years of marriage until Robert passed away on March 30, 1996. Besides being a loving wife and mother, Sally taught elementary school in Farmington and Hancock, Minnesota. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Hutchinson, where she served as a member of the Dorcas Club, was active in a Church Bible Study group, and played in the Hosanna Handbell Choir. Sally enjoyed sewing, reading, gardening, and she especially cherished spending time with her children, grandchildren, great grandson, and friends. Sally became a resident of Harmony River Living Center in Hutchinson, Minnesota, in August of 2013. She passed away at the age of 80 on Thursday, April 10, 2014. Blessed be her memory. Sally is survived by her: Children, Lynda Springer and her husband, Jeffrey of Cresco, IA, Patricia Dirks and her husband, Douglas of Apple Valley, MN, David Cowger and his wife, Annette of Fenton, MI, Daniel Cowger and his wife Karleen of Hutchinson, MN; Grandchildren, Michelle Christianson and her husband, Todd, Steven Springer and his wife, Brianna, Robert Dirks and his wife Christine, David Dirks, John Dirks, Kate Woelffer and her husband, Matthew, Victoria Cowger, Samantha Cowger, Elizabeth Cowger, Michael Cowger, Mitchell Cowger, Maxwell Cowger, Matthew Cowger; Great Grandson, John Robert Dirks; Brother, Robert Horak and his wife, Ann of Deland, FL; Sisters, Donna Lilley of Des Moines, IA, Nancy Guldberg and her husband, Jack of Excelsior, MN; Many other relatives and friends. Sally is preceded in death by her parents, Stuart and Katherine Horak; husband, Dr. Robert Cowger; sister, Janet DenBeste.
