Bio

Emil John Stefek, an Army veteran, retired contractor and owner of E.J. Stefek Construction Co., died Friday. He was 71. Stefek built many building in Corpus Christi and the Coastal Bend, some of which were the Carmel Village Shopping Center, Gaslight Square, St. Theresa Parish Hall, Deux Cine, which is now Cine 6, and Sokol Hall. He was involved in the restoration and reconstruction of several historical buildings including the Heritage Park houses Galvan House, Irish Culture House and Jalufka House. He was also involved in the restoration and reconstruction of Schoenstatt Sisters of Mary Shrine in Rockport and the McGloin House in San Patricio. His company built the Greenwood pool and the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi campus pool. E.J. Stefek Construction Co. also did remodeling work on the Wilson Building, First Baptist Church, Jones Building, Church of the Good Shepherd, St. Theresa's Church, P&S Hospital and the original Boat & Net restaurants in Corpus Christi. His company also built the Del Mar College courtyard, Reynolds Aluminum Plant medical center, the Padre Isles welcome markers and several homes and offices. He was a Catholic and a member of the Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce, local Carpenter's Union and the Society of the Body of Christ. Stefek is survived by his wife, Martha; four daughters, Mary Sladecek of Austin and Martha Majek, Josie Kaufmann and Tricia Majek, all of Corpus Christi; two sisters, Mary Strmiska of Taylor and Lillian Schwertner of Jarrell; four brothers, Bill Stefek of Killeen and Joe, John and Jim Stefek; 17 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Cage-Mills Funeral Directors, Everhart chapel, is in charge of funeral arrangements.
