Bio

PORT LAVACA - A wonderful man was welcomed home in Glory on Thursday, March 6th, in the early evening. John E. Dumas was born in Izoro, TX on February 15, 1924 to John and Zelma (Fowler) Dumas. He married Virginia (Mobley) Dumas, his wife of 67 years on April 9, 1946 in Brownwood, TX. He is preceded in death by his great granddaughter Alaina Barecky, parents, sisters, LaVern Byars and Cleda Lewis, and brothers Ed Dumas and Dalton Dumas. He served with the 82nd Airborne in North Africa during WWII. He was a hard working business man for many years. He ran the Dumas Gulf Station, Dumas Texaco, and finally Dumas Used Cars and Drop It and Lock It Storage Units for 37 years. He served as a Deacon at the First Presbyterian Church of Port Lavaca. He also worked with Boy Scout Troop 243. He was very active in civic affairs in his earlier years. He was a charter member and president of the Kiwanis Club of Port Lavaca, Commander of VFW Post 4403, and worked with the Salvation Army. His wife and family meant the world to him, and it was evident in his everyday life. He was a selfless man and gave his all in everything he did. As Tom Brokaw would say, "His generation was one of the greatest." He leaves behind a wonderful legacy that will live on through his family always. Interment with military honors under the auspices of the Calhoun County Veterans Joint Honor Guard will follow in Greenlawn Gardens.
