Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Shelby Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father John Rooney officiating. Visitation will be held at Dubas Funeral Home in Osceola on Monday, January 20 from 5-7 p.m. followed by a 7 p.m. Rosary with Father Val Bartek officiating. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Shelby. Dubas Funeral Home of Osceola and Stromsburg has been entrusted with arrangements. Duane was born April 3, 1929 in Polk County to Engelbert and Anne (Augustin) Gabel. He grew up in Polk County, attended District 40 grade school and graduated from Osceola High School in 1946. On September 19, 1949 he was united in marriage to Mildred Flamme at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby. Duane was a farmer and livestock feeder. After retirement he enjoyed fishing, wood working, carving, metal sculpture, gardening and traveling. He also collected and restored Allis Chalmers tractors. Duane was a lifetime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was a past Acolyte and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Survivors include his wife Mildred; six children, Cynthia (Dan) Treadway of Mesquite, TX, Garold Gabel of Omaha, Patrick (Chris) Gabel of Osceola, Daniel (Kathy) Gabel of Osceola, Catherine (Steve) Kohl of Columbus and Anthony Gabel of Fremont; 16 grandchildren, Troy (Tracey) Treadway of Rockwall, TX, Tammy (Joe) Roy of Rockwall, TX, Jennifer Carter of Forney, TX, Michelle (Ryan) Sowa of San Antonio, TX, Brian (Heather) Gabel of Shelby, Tom (Jodi) Gabel of Lincoln, Mike (Kelsey) Gabel of Osceola, Jeremy Gabel of Shelby, Tim Gabel of Shelby, Corey Gabel of Osceola, Elizabeth Lofgren and friend Kobby Kpesenu of Omaha, Andy Kohl of Millikan, CO, Hannah Kohl of Everett, WA, Jeff Kohl of Lincoln, Chris (Stephanie) Gabel of Howells and Lance Gabel; 16 great grandchildren, Tanner, Todd and Tyler Treadway; Brooke Morken; Kasey and Kara Carter; Brenden, Halle and Brant Gabel; Ethan, Morgan and Adam Gabel; Alayna and Declan Gabel; Evan Sowa and Keren Kpesenu; one brother Charles Gabel. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Margie and her husband Joseph Dobesh, and sister-in-law Mary Jo Gabel. Memorials are suggested to Masses or donors choice in lieu of flowers.
