Arthur E. Walkowiak passed away on Feb. 23, 2014, in San Marcos, Texas. He was born on March 28, 1917, to Michael and Johanna Walkowiak in Elba, Neb. He married Dorothy Pels of Temple, Texas, in 1943. He enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1938. He was stationed at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii when Pearl Harbor was attacked and served in the Pacific Theater during WWII. After active duty he remained in the Army Reserves and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was employed as a meteorologist for the National Weather Service for 33 years. He retired in 1979, after serving 27 of those years in Lubbock, Texas. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association and a life member of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association. He enjoyed making model airplanes that encompassed the time frame of the Wright Brothers through WWII. Many of these are displayed at the Science Spectrum Museum in Lubbock. He also enjoyed traveling extensively in the US and abroad. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; brothers, Leonard and Hubert Walkowiak; and sister, Margaret Svoboda. He is survived by daughter, Shari and husband Eddie Daffern of Staples, Texas; daughter, Carol Romano and husband Paul of Virginia; three grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. A memorial service, with military honors, will be performed at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Texas, March 5, 2014, at 2:30 P.M.
