Bio

John Owen Dean 1911 - 2003 Early Life: John was born December 11, 1911, the firstborn child of Owen and Emma Amy Dickerson Dean, in American Fork, Utah, where he also grew up. As a child, he attended the A. F. Fourth Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Life's Work | Service | Interests: John graduated from Brigham Young University in 1936 with a degree in agronomy. On October 12, 1936, John married Marguerite Lundgren. She died August 3, 1964. He later married Jeanne Scott Brinton on September 17, 1966. He lived in California for almost 30 years: Shafter, Cucamonga, Upland, Riverside and Banning. He returned to Utah after his retirement and lived in American Fork, Fillmore and Pleasant Grove. His life work was as an agronomist; and later, as a soil conservationist for the United States Department of Agriculture in California. He developed innovative farm implements and spread best practices to farmers and vineyard, orchard and grove owners. During World War, II he was in charge of a C.C.C. camp, where young men from the inner city of Los Angeles learned to help on the farms. At the peak of his career, he was the Chief Soil Conservationist for most of Southern California. He was in charge of teaching and encouraging farmers about land, water management, crop practices and erosion control. John loved his work. John was an award-winning amateur photographer. One of his photographs hung in the Smithsonian Institute for one year as part of a soil conservation exhibit. John was a jack-of-all-trades. In his early years, he was a farmer, truck driver, cotton breeder, sand and gravel worker, power shovel operator, tunnel worker, dynamite operator and welder. Later, he held three patents: an eye testing apparatus, a heat mover (a radiator for wood stoves) and an entirely new design for an automobile radiator cap. He loved to fish in the California surf as well as the Utah lakes. John was instrumental in the development of the Church in southern California. Jeanne and John served as a missionary couple in the Independence Visitors' Center in Missouri. John Owen Dean passed from this life July 29, 2003, of causes incident to age. He was 91.
