Bio

Helen Margaret (Homan) Wlaschin, of Cedar Rapids, Nebraska, passed away Saturday, January 25, 2014 at Samaritan Estates Assisted Living in Albion, Nebraska. Helen, the daughter of John Peter, Sr. and Mary (Puetz) Homan was born on March 18, 1916 on a farm northwest of Cedar Rapids, Nebraska. Helen attended St. Anthony's Catholic Schools and graduated from the Catholic High School in 1933. During high school, she played on the girls' basketball team. On June 3, 1940, Helen was united in marriage to Ambrose Julius Wlaschin at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, Nebraska. The couple lived and farmed northwest of Cedar Rapids, Nebraska. Helen continued to live on the farm after her husband's death until December 30, 2013, when she entered the Assisted Living, Albion, Nebraska. Helen was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, Nebraska where she was a member of the Altar Society and was President in the 1950's. She enjoyed dancing, playing cards, gardening, baking and reading the newspapers. Helen celebrated her 80th Alumni from High School in August 2013 at the Cedar Rapids Alumni Banquet. Helen is survived by: sons, Karl Wlaschin and wife Joann, John Wlaschin and wife Mary Kay, all of Columbus, Nebraska and Ed Wlaschin and wife Pat of Spalding, Nebraska; daughter, Emma Loeffler and husband Bill of Cedar Rapids, Nebraska; grandchildren: Aaron, Allan, Jesse, Sheila, Craig, Jay, Josh, Tiffany, Julie and Jill; 17 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Edith Wlaschin of Albion, Nebraska; and a host of relatives and friends. Helen was preceded in death by: husband, Ambrose Julius Wlaschin in January 2010; parents; brothers, John and Matt Homan and sisters, Theresa Goering and Mary Primrose. A Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, Nebraska with Msgr. Ralph Steffensmeier as officiator. Interment was in the parish cemetery.
