------------------------- JOHN GIVENS TORIAN, was born 21 June 1886 in Louisiana to William Bethell Torian and Mary Livinia Redding and married 21 June 1904, Celeste Stelly, born 13 January 1884 in Carencro, Louisiana. John died in April 1969 and Celeste died in April 1970. In 1910 John and his family lived in Lafayette Parish, Louisiana, and were listed in the census as John G. Torian, age 25, head, married 6 years, born in Louisiana, and working as a clerk for the railroad; Celeste, age 26, wife, 3 children and 3 living; Edward [sic], age 5, son; Berma [sic should say Bernice], age 4, daughter; Mathe [sic should say Mattie], age 3, daughter; and a servant. In 1920 they were living at 210 W. 15th, in Houston, Harris County, Texas, and were listed as John G. Torrian [sic], rent, age 34, born Louisiana, supervisor of wages, government; Celest [sic] O., wife, age 36?, born Louisiana; E. W., son, age 14; Bernice, daughter, age 13; Mattie, daughter, age 11; and Iris, daughter, age 5, born Louisiana. The 1930 census shows them living at 2441 Prospect St., Houston, Harris County, and listed as John G Torian, owned home with value of $18,000, age 43, age 18 at first marriage, born Louisiana, working as Assistant General Manager for the railroad; Celeste, wife, age 44, age 19 at first marriage, born Louisiana; Iris, daughter, age 15, born Louisiana; and a servant. The 1936 Houston City Directory shows J. G. Torian living at 2441 Prospect Ave. World War I Draft Registration Cards show John Givens Torian, born 12 June 1886 in Louisiana, Caucasian, registered in Houston, Harris County, Texas. Who’s Who in Texas, A Biographical Directory, 1931 John Givens Torian, railroad official; was born in Lafayette, La., June 21, 1886, the son of William Bethel and Mary Lavinia (Redding) Torian. Early education in public schools of Lafayette; after high school graduation, attended Southwestern Louisiana Institute, Lafayette. Married Celeste Ophelia Stelly, of Caranero, La., June 21, 1904. Children: Edwin Walters, Bernice Louise, Mattie Glenn, Iris Estelle. Beginning as a call boy at the age of 14, before finishing his schooling, Mr. Torian has since been identified with some phase of railroading. He worked himself up through the various and successive positions of brakeman, yardmaster, chief clerk to the superintendent, rules examiner, inspector of transportation, trainmaster, superintendent, supervisor of wages, assistant to vice-president and general manager, and assistant general manager, a position he now holds with the Southern Pacific Ry. Co. in Tex. and La. His knowledge of modern transportation methods is widely recognized. Important civic, commercial and fraternal movements receive his full support. John Givens Torian’s obituary: Railroad Executive Dies Here Funeral services were held at 10 am today in St. Peter's Catholic Church in Carencro for John Givens Torian, 82, retired vice president of Southern Pacific Railroad Co., who died at 8:46 pm Saturday in Lafayette General Hospital. Interment was in the family tomb in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Mr. Torian was born June 21, 1886 on the family plantation near Lafayette. He was the son of W.B. Torian and Lavinia Redding Torian.
